New ‘Living by Water’ Handout

Living in the Flathead means more than enjoying stunning views and open spaces – it means being a good steward of the land and water that make this place so special.

The new Living by Water handout helps Flathead residents and landowners protect the clean, clear waters that define our valley. It offers practical tips for maintaining healthy shorelines, managing runoff, landscaping with native plants, caring for septic systems, and preventing aquatic invasive species.

Clean water is one of the Flathead’s most valuable resources — supporting fish and wildlife, recreation, agriculture, and our communities. Protecting it takes awareness and action from everyone who lives here.

Whether you live along a stream, lake, or anywhere in the watershed, your daily choices matter. Discover how you can help keep Flathead’s waters clean and connected for future generations.

Practical tips for clean water stewards:

  • Caring for waterfront property – Maintain natural vegetation buffers along shorelines to prevent erosion and protect habitat.

  • Managing runoff and stormwater – Use permeable surfaces, rain gardens, and careful landscaping to reduce pollutants flowing into local waters.

  • Maintaining septic systems – Regular inspection and pumping can prevent contamination of groundwater and nearby streams.

  • Landscaping with native plants – Native vegetation helps filter runoff, stabilizes soil, and provides habitat for birds and pollinators.

  • Preventing aquatic invasive species – Follow Clean, Drain, Dry practices to stop the spread of invaders that threaten Flathead’s waterways.
