The Future of Farming in Flathead County

The Montana Land Reliance is hosting a free community forum on October 11 at the Flathead County Fairgrounds to explore the future viability of farming in the Flathead Valley. During the last 25 years, the Flathead Valley has experienced an unprecedented rate of subdivision and development, often on some of the richest farm land in the state. This has left many to question the future of farming in the Flathead Valley.

The forum will examine factors critical to the continued viability of farming, including the need to maintain productive farm land, the need for farming to be economically viable, and the need for young farmers. Speakers include Mark Lalum, Manager, Cenex Harvest States; Dr. Jeff Jacobsen, Dean, Montana State University College of Agriculture; Ron de Yong, Director, Montana Department of Agriculture, and Mark Schiltz, Western Manager, Montana Land Reliance. A lunch of locally grown food will be provided. For information contact Mark Schiltz at 837-2178.

Work Party to Maintain Trails at the Owen Sowerwine Natural Area

Join Flathead Audubon Society members for a half day of work at the Owen Sowerwine Natural Area on Saturday, October 1. Audubon will be conducting trail and bridge maintenance on existing trails, weed control along initial sections of the Greenridge Trail, and updating materials on the kiosk. This is an opportunity to spend a Saturday morning outdoors with bird enthusiasts and help with Flathead Audubon’s management of the Owen Sowerwine Natural Area.

Volunteers will meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Montessori School on Willow Glen Drive for a short orientation session, and then break out into small groups to work under team leaders. Bring heavy work gloves, wear sturdy shoes, and dress for the weather. Tools and other necessary equipment will be provided, but bring hand clippers and brush loppers if possible. Work will finish by noon. For information visit www.flatheadaudubon.org.
