Conservation Project Protects North Fork Wildlife Corridor
Thanks to Linda and Del Coolidge, a new conservation easement, will help protect an important wildlife corridor. The Coolidges donated a conservation easement, held by the Flathead Land Trust, on 30 acres near Polebridge, in the North Fork Flathead watershed. The wildlife corridor connects protected lands of Glacier National Park and the Flathead National Forest.
"Wildlife, including bears, wolves, elk and many other species need corridors and undeveloped space where humans don’t intrude. Hopefully our modest contribution will inspire other landowners to protect part or all of their land with a conservation easement that benefits future generations by preserving a unique ecosystem.”
- Linda and Del

Spring Restoration Planting Update
Restoration Ecologist Franz Ingelfinger, with MT Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) coordinated River Steward Program efforts to plant 400 trees and shrubs this spring at two FWP properties with assistance from the Flathead Lakers and a Montana Conservation Corps crew.
Restoration focused on planting cottonwoods, chokecherries, and flowering dogwoods using different protection methods - fences, tubes, weed mats, and herbicide treatments.
Aspen restoration included fencing around existing aspen groves to reduce deer browsing and allow young trees to grow. By monitoring which methods are most successful, program partners hope to learn which restoration methods might work best for landowners, as well as require less maintenance long-term.
Restoration this spring focused on the Foys Bend Fisheries Conservation Area along the Flathead River, and the Ray Kuhns Wildlife Management Area along Highway 424.

Community Fishing Pond Opening
in Columbia Falls
The Columbia Falls Community Fishing Pond is the result of a community-wide collaboration between the City of Columbia Falls, the Flathead Land Trust, and the LOR Foundation to enhance livability and build upon the strengths that make Columbia Falls unique. The community decided on a fishing pond at River's Edge Park to increase access to recreation for youth, protect clean water, and promotes the quality of life in Columbia Falls.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will stock the pond with westslope cutthroat trout, the state fish. Anglers 15 and older are required to catch and release all trout, while anglers 14 and younger can keep one trout per day.
